Lauren Cross

PhD student (York University)

Lauren is examining how shifts in sea-ice dynamics influence the distribution, foraging ecology and predator-prey relationships of polar bears in James Bay and southern Hudson Bay. Using collar telemetry data and systematic aerial surveys, she is characterizing late-season sea ice and documenting polar bear distribution, evidence of predation and individual characteristics, including sex, age, group size and body condition. In addition, she is employing quantitative fatty acid signature analysis and stable isotope analysis to evaluate dietary habits, foraging success, and body condition in relation to changing sea ice conditions. Her research will provide critical insight into how polar bear distribution, food-web dynamics, and habitat selection during the late-season ice period are being shaped by environmental change in northern ecosystems.
